JM Family Raises Nearly Half a Million for United Way – and Has Fun Doing It

Financially supporting the United Way of Broward County has been important to JM Family Enterprises for many years, and making its associates aware of the vital work the organization does in the community is equally significant to the automotive company. That is why JM Family associates get creative during its annual fundraising campaign, which blends these efforts by truly putting the fun in fundraising.

JM Family associates recently concluded their racing-themed United Way campaign dubbed “Rev It Up For Our Community!” Associates were educated on the importance of supporting the nonprofit’s mission while participating in a variety of interactive events. They also received motivational words from Colin Brown, JM Family President and CEO, encouraging increased participation and to “rev it up” by topping 2014 contributions. These collective efforts helped raise $435,028 -- which is $50,000 more than last year’s donation and over $100,000 more than 2013.

“I am so proud our associates’ commitment to helping the community and their participation during this year’s campaign,” said Brown, who also serves as a board member for the United Way of Broward County. “Their passion and support make it possible for the United Way to continue identifying challenges and developing the programs required to service those needs.”

Throughout August and early September, several fun events and awareness activities kept the competitive spirit fired up. These included Pit Crew Tune Up, a version of Pin the Tail on the Donkey where blindfolded associates attached accessories to the right part of a car; a lunchtime workshop where associates built, decorated and personalized wooden derby cars slated to race down a customized speedway; and in the final days of the campaign, the souped-up derby cars participated in a series of pre-qualifying races to compete in the finals and win bragging rights and a Toyota NASCAR racing package. Participation in the events increased chances of winning raffle prizes, which included electronics, boat trips, gift cards and more.

“JM Family’s associates put their hearts into this year’s campaign, and there was no hiding how much fun and passion they had doing it,” said Kathleen Cannon, President and CEO of United Way of Broward County. “They have a unique way of engaging associates and increasing awareness while raising much-needed dollars for the community partners we help fund. We cannot do the work we are doing without the support of organizations like JM Family.”

At JM Family, a music group called The Associates was also formed to compete in United Way’s annual “Rock United,” where members of the community partake in a battle of the bands. The Associates will perform on stage in front of hundreds of audience members at Revolution Live night club in Fort Lauderdale on September 25 for the fourth year in a row.
